At one time, Steamboat Mountain, elevation 7422 feet, like Powell Plateau, was part of the Canyon's rim. Captain John Hance, reportedly the first settler in the Canyon, is credited with carving a number of trails including routes to Steamboat Mountain and Powell Plateau. One story we heard about Hance tells about his encounter with a tourist who asked about his missing index finger. His response, "I wore it off pointing at the scenery." It sounds far-fetched only if you have never been to the North Rim. |
