10steamboat-mtn.jpg At one time, Steamboat Mountain, elevation 7422 feet, like Powell Plateau, was part of the Canyon's rim. Captain John Hance, reportedly the first settler in the Canyon, is credited with carving a number of trails including routes to Steamboat Mountain and Powell Plateau. One story we heard about Hance tells about his encounter with a tourist who asked about his missing index finger. His response, "I wore it off pointing at the scenery." It sounds far-fetched only if you have never been to the North Rim.
