Powell Plateau, named to honor Major Powell, leader of the first scientific expedition down the Colorado River and through its canyon, is one of the largest landforms within the Grand Canyon National Park that is not contiguous to the canyon's rim. Although there is no surface water on Powell Plateau, it has the highest density of identified prehistoric Native People ruins. Also in this photograph is Steamboat Mountain, named for its shape.
