Classified a "shield volcano", Mount Bailey's gentle contour fills the western horizon across Diamond Lake. This is the sight that greets many of the campers at Diamond Lake campground each morning. Mount Bailey trail (#1451) provides access to its 8,368 foot summit. The view of Diamond Lake and Mt. Thielsen must be fantastic from Mt. Bailey but, frankly, the Diamond Lake area is gorgeous. Diamond Lake, the largest natural lake in Umpqua National Forest, is the product of Mt. Mazama's eruption some 7,000 years ago and glaciers of the last ice age and is becoming a popular destination site. |
