STATE: Texas
REGION: Southern
RANGER DISTRICT: Caddo-LBJ
NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Honey Grove
RESERVATIONS: No
DIRECTIONS:
In Honey Grove, TX, at the intersection of U.S. Rt. 82 and FM
Rt. 100, take Rt. 100 north 9.8 miles to Lake Crockett sign.
Turn after sign onto FM Rt. 409 west and go 4.3 miles to
campground on left.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 490 ft.
The campground has a single loop and a short spur leading to
the boat ramp on the north shore of Coffee Mill Lake.
Southern red oak, hickory and other hardwoods provide shade
but little privacy between sites. Some campsites have a view
of the lake but none have direct access to the water. There
is a large grassy area off the spur that is well suited for
a group of tent campers. The campsites on the loop have fire
rings and lantern poles and enjoy ample shade from towering
trees but with no middlestory and only fallen leaves for the
understory. Privacy between campsites is poor. Although best
suited to tent campers, the campground could accomodate slide-in,
tent, and pop-up style recreational vehicles.
Coffeemill Lake, a.k.a. Coffee Mill Lake, was developed in the
1930s to provide area citizens with recreational opportunities
and continues to meet this need. A campground was added in 1968;
volunteers improved it in the 1990s.
Possible day trip is Lake Fannin that features a historic lodge
and cabins currently open only on weekends. Lake Fannin is a small,
canoe-friendly lake.
