DIRECTIONS:
In Jefferson, CO, at the Jefferson Lake Road/Michigan Creek Road
sign, turn west onto County Rt. 35 and go 2 miles to end of
pavement and Jefferson Lake campground sign.  Turn right at sign
onto gravel road and go 1.3 miles to Jefferson Lake Recreation
Area entrance booth.  Continue another 1.5 miles to campground
sign.  Turn right at sign into campground.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 9,900 ft.

The campground, one of three in the Jefferson Lake Recreation
Area, is a tight single loop in a stand of young Aspen and mature
spruce.  Most sites are sunny.  Jefferson Lake is a short drive
from the campground.  The campground is the closest to the
Colorado Trail.

This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.

Turn left at signs onto Rt. 96 and go 0.9 miles to an intersection. Continue straight onto dirt and gravel road and go 0.6 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 8,200 ft. The campground is a single loop on a Ponderosa pine dotted hillside. The camping sites are widely spaced and spacious. Because the campground is a short distance away from the South Platte River, it enjoys a more tranquil atmosphere and slower pace. County Rt. 96 follows the track of the Colorado Midland Railroad, the first standard gauge line built through the Colorado Rockies. The drive along this route (Elevenmile Canyon) offers ever- changing views of the South Platte River, rock formations and multi-colored canyon walls. Turn right onto Rt. 126 and go 13.7 miles to campground sign (Forest Rt. 550). Turn right at sign onto Rt. 550 (dirt) and go 5 miles to campground sign. Turn left into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 7,400 ft. The campground, one of two in the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area, is a single loop located in a stand of Ponderosa pine with grass understory. Some camping sites are well separated. The campground is convenient to Buffalo Creek and, via the Colorado Trail, the Lost Creek Wilderness. Firewood is available for a fee. The campground, a single loop and convenient to US Rt. 285, is nestled among a pleasant mixture of Aspen, spruce and other conifers. The camping sites are widely spaced on rolling hillsides providing good privacy. Volleyball and horseshoe facilities are provided during the summer. Turn left onto Rt. 62 and go 4.5 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign onto dirt road into campground. NOTE: County Rt. 62 becomes dirt and rough in 0.5 miles, then paved in 4.1 miles. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 9,500 ft. The campground, pack it in, pack it out, is a tight single loop under Lodgepole pines with grass understory. The camping sites are fairly close together providing marginal privacy. The campground borders the Mt. Evans Wilderness. Geneva Park, a large open meadow, is located at campground entrance and provides a pleasant view from some sites. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques. Turn right into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 7,800 ft. The campground meanders through a very large stand of mature Ponderosa pines, winding and looping along the rolling hillsides. Look for the Black Tufted squirrels. The understory is grass, some sites are close together and privacy is limited. The campground is across the road from the Centennial Trail, next to State Rt. 67 and convenient to Woodland Park, CO. Firewood is available for a fee. This campground is often used as the base for visiting attractions in the Pikes Peak area. Some of the attractions are: Pikes Peak, the Air Force Academy and Garden of the Gods. Turn left at traffic light, then immediately right onto County Rt. 43, and go 6.9 miles to a "Y" intersection. Bear left, staying on Rt. 43, and go 1.4 miles to campground sign. Turn left into campground. NOTE: Last 0.6 miles of County Rt. 43 is narrow in places and dirt. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 9,000 ft. This little campground, pack it in, pack it out, is nestled in a grove of mature, mixed conifers with heavy grass understory. It is next to Deer Creek and convenient to the Mt. Evans Wilderness. CAMPGROUND NAME: Devils Head VISIT DATE: 09/22/0999 UPDATE DATE: 4/4/2018 STATE: Colorado REGION: Rocky Mountain RANGER DISTRICT: South Platte NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Sedalia RESERVATIONS: No DIRECTIONS: From Sedalia, CO, take State Rt. 67 west 9.7 miles to Rampart Range Road sign. Turn left at sign onto Rampart Range Road (gravel) and go 9.1 miles to an intersection and Devils Head sign. Continue straight and go 0.4 miles to campground. NOTE: Expect the entire 9.1-mile Rampart Range Rd. to have a significant washboard surface. Leave the good china at home. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 8,800 ft. The campground, one of three located in the Rampart Range Recreation Area, is composed of two sections. The smaller, upper section is on a hilltop among Douglas fir and huge boulders. The lower section meanders down the hillside along an Aspen-lined gully. The campground's interior roads and parking aprons are heavily eroded. Adjacent to the lower section is the Devils Head National Recreation Trail which leads to the last working fire tower in the Forest. Rope climbing on Devils Head is becoming more popular. The Rampart Recreation Area is known for its many miles and various levels of ATV and dirt bike trails. There are several dozens designated dispersed campsites all along Rampart Range Road. Most of these campsites could accommodate larger groups but fill up quickly for weekends. NOTE: This is bear country; practise safe food storage techniques. Turn left at sign onto Rampart Range Rd. (gravel) and go 4.7 miles to campground sign. Turn right at sign and go 0.3 miles to campground. NOTE: Expect the entire 9.1-mile Rampart Range Rd. to have a significant washboard surface. Leave the good china at home. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 8,200 ft. The campground, one of three in the Rampart Range Recreation Area, is in the middle of the Rampart Range and stretches along a ridge among Douglas fir, Ponderosa pine and Aspen. Access to a network of trails for ATV, dirt bikes and hiking is available both inside and outside the campground. The understory is grass and there is minimal privacy between camping sites. There are several dozen designated dispersed campsites along Rampart Range Rd that could accommodate groups; they fill up early on week-ends. CAMPGROUND NAME: Fourmile VISIT DATE: 09/13/1999 UPDATE DATE: 4/4/2018 STATE: Colorado REGION: Rocky Mountain RANGER DISTRICT: South Park NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Fairplay RESERVATIONS: No DIRECTIONS: From Fairplay, CO, take US Rt. 285 south 1.1 miles to Fourmile Creek Road sign (County Rt. 18). Turn right at sign onto Rt. 18 (dirt and gravel) and go 2.1 miles to an intersection (no signs). Continue straight another 8.7 miles to campground sign. Turn right into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 10,600 ft. The campground stretches out along a mountainside, along Fourmile Creek, among spruce, Bristlecone and Limber pine and Aspen. Since the campground is very rocky, finding a comfortable spot to pitch a tent could be a challenge. The campground is located near Horseshoe Mt. with its text book example of a glacial cirque. County Rt. 18 is the Horseshoe/Fourmile Historic Auto Tour. Pick up interpretive brochure from the South Park Ranger District Office in Fairplay. The nearby Limber Grove Trail winds through a stand of mixed conifers up a mountainside then across a barren talus field to a secluded grove of 1,000 year old (plus) Limber pine. Vistas along the way are delightful, but the sight of those "old ones" with their huge, twisted trunks and branches is awesome. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques. All the camping sites are widely separated affording lots of privacy even though the understory is grass. This campground is often used as the base for visiting attractions in the Pikes Peak area. Scattered Ponderosa pine and spruce provide a little shade to some sites. County Rt. 96 follows the track of the Midland Railroad, the first standard gauge line built through the Colorado Rockies. The campground is very attractive and close enough to Lost Creek Wilderness to make it ideal for hikers. The two walk-in tent sites are secluded and private; one is next to the creek. The campground is popular for winter recreation. Turn right onto Rt. 5 and go 7.1 miles to campground sign at "Y" intersection (County Rt. 22). Bear right onto Rt. 22 and go 4.1 miles to campground sign. Turn left at sign into campground. This is an attractive campground stretching out along a ridge above Weston Creek in a heavy mixture of Aspen and conifers, including Blue spruce. Although the campground is in a densely wooded area, some sites are close together with no understory providing little privacy. The campground is convenient to Weston Pass and the historic sites along the Old Weston Pass Toll Road.
