The states of Nebraska is located just about in the center of America. Although it doesn't have the towering mountain peaks or mighty rivers of its neighbors, there are magnificent rolling prairies and views that go on forever. Lakes and woodlands might be at a premium in this heartland state but camper will find both managed by the Forest Service in Samuel R. McKelview National Forest.
Merritt Reservoir offers visitors to the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest a variety of water recreation opportunities but car, tent, recreational vehicle (RV) and motorhome enthusiasts will want to stay at Steer Creek campground. The Forest's only developed campground, Steer Creek provides a quiet, restful place for enjoying nature. As an alternative to the hurly-burly activity on the Reservoir, the serene, secluded Steer Creek campground is a delight. This camping location is located in a woodland of 2,200 acres, man-planted conifers and surrounded by sandhills and prairie. The only sounds to interrupt the stillness of this place are a nearby heard of cattle, the song of a meadowlark and the whisper of a breeze through the pines. The evening brings the crackle of campfires and millions of stars shining brightly.
Although small when compared to most U.S. National Forests, the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest provides its visitors with the delightful experience of total peacefulness and tranquility. Steer Creek campground, so close to some of the best fishing in Nebraska, makes the Samuel R McKelvie National Forest a favorite place to visit for both locals and those how have discovered it.
