sign. Turn left at sign into campground.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 8,000 ft.
The campground stretches out along Gunnison River among
Cottonwoods and shrubs with several sites teetering on the
river's banks. It is convenient to State Rt. 135 with the sound
of the river heard from all camping sites. Sites 6 through 10
are on a dead-end with no turn around. The campground is well
located for fishing and whitewater sports (on the Gunnison River
and nearby Taylor River).

From Sapeniro, CO, take US Rt. 50 west 9.2 miles to Forest
Access/Alpine Plateau Road sign (Forest Rt. 867). Turn left at
sign onto gravel road (Rt. 867) and go 21 miles to "T"
intersection (Forest Rt. 868). Turn right onto Rt. 868 and go
4.7 miles into campground.
NOTE: After first 6 miles on Forest Service roads, they become
intermittently rough, rocky and single-lane with few turnouts.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 9,800 ft.
The campground, pack it in, pack it out, is a single loop between
a talus slope and Big Blue Creek in a dense grove of spruce
trees. The campground is convenient to the Uncompahgre
Wilderness and a variety of 4WD, horse and hiking trails.
NOTE: Although Forest Service literature says this campground is
in the Gunnison National Forest, signs leading to the campground
and at the campground indicate the campground is in the
Uncompahgre National Forest.

shade but loads of colorful wildflowers.

privacy.

The campground's name comes from the days when this location
served as a dinner stop for the Denver to Aspen stage coach line.
The campground stretches along the Taylor River with most camping
sites having the river on one side and a vista of the Sawatch
Mountain Range on the other. There are many dispersed camping
areas along Taylor River (Forest Rt. 742). Firewood is available
for a fee.

The elevation is 8,800 ft.
The campground is divided into two sections (0.1 miles apart)
across County Rt. 742 from the floatable Taylor River. The trees
are mostly Lodgepole with little understory providing no privacy
between sites. The upper or eastern section has no water.
Traffic noise from County Rt. 742 may "drown" out the majestic
sounds of the river at some sites. The campground is well
located for rock climbing, whitewater sports, hiking and fishing

miles to campground sign (Forest Rt. 706). Turn right at sign
onto Rt. 706 and go 2.4 miles to campground.
NOTE: The last 9.2 miles of County Rd. 12 are dirt and gravel.
Forest Rt. 706 is unpaved, narrow and maybe rough in places.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 9,300 ft.
The campground stretches around half of Lost Lake Slough among
spruce trees and wildflowers and has two unnamed sections. The
smaller section doubles as a picnic area and equestrian camping
area. Campers without horses are welcomed in the whole campground
but equestrian campers are permitted only in this section. Beside
horses, "equestrian" also includes llama, goats, pot bellied pigs,
etc; confirm with ranger district office. Some sites have view of
lake with Beckwith Mountains in the background. This is a very
pretty little campground - well worth the drive. Consider hiking
Three Lakes trail to Lost Lake, Dollar Lake and waterfall for good
photography and picnic lunch.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 9,000 ft.
The campground is divided into two sections, separated by Lottis
Creek and has four loops. One loop is for groups and is not included
in this survey. Loops Union Park and Baldy have campsite with electric
hookups while Park Cone Loops has no hookups. Campsite are tucked
in among Lodgepole and some Aspen trees. The campground is
convenient to the Fossil Ridge Wilderness and the 2,400-acre
Taylor Park Reservoir. Although there is little understory, the
camping sites are well separated providing adequate privacy.
Firewood is available for a fee.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 8,200 ft.
The campground, pack it in, pack it out, is located about a mile
from McClure Pass and is roughly in the shape of a figure eight.
Some sites back up to State Rt. 133 while others are along a ravine.
Aspen provide shade for most of the sites but a few spruce are
sprinkled around the campground. The understory is very heavy
and jungle-like. The camping sites are generally well separated,
but the heavy understory might make finding tent locations a challenge.
NOTE: This campground was slated to be decommissioned but
Gunnison Engery Corporation (GEC) has partnered with the
Gunnison National Forest to keep it open.

The campground is a single loop above Mirror Lake. Some camping
sites have view of lake and all sites share a vista of the
surrounding mountains. The campground is popular with off-road
vehicle enthusiasts and is convenient to a number of OHV trails.
Firewood is available for a fee. A day trip to the historic town
of Tincup should be of interest to the entire family. Limited
groceries can be purchased in the town.

The campground is attractive and composed of two loops and two
spurs in a large stand of Lodgepole pines. One is small and
tightly configured. The other loop, above Quartz Creek, is large
and has mostly pull-throughs, widely spaced. The spur with sites
10 through 14 is located along the creek and has no turn-around.
Campground features an ORV-friendly attitude and lantern posts.
Exploring the nearby town of Pitkin is a good day trip activity.

In Almont, CO, at intersection of State Rt. 135 and County Rt.
742, take Rt. 742 for 8.7 miles to campground sign. Turn left at
sign into campground.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 8,600 ft.
The campground, a single loop, stretches along the south side of
the floatable Taylor River among Aspen and spruce trees. Some of
the sites are located along the river. There is adequate privacy
between sites and the sound of the river can be heard throughout.
The campground is well located for rock climbing, whitewater
sports, hiking and fishing activities. Firewood is available for
a fee.
This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.

From Sargents, CO, take US Rt. 50 east 1.1 miles to Forest
Access/Tomichi Creek Rd. sign (County Rt. 888). Turn left at

NOTE: County Rt. 888 becomes Forest Rt. 888 (dirt) after 3.9
miles.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 9,800 ft.
The campground is composed of three loops with Timichi Creek
running alongside each loop. Aspen and spruce trees provide
shade for most sites while a thick understory of wildflowers and
shrubs provide color and privacy between sites. Hummingbirds
abound with their whirling motion. This combined with the sounds
of the fast-moving creek and wind through the trees makes this
campground a pleasant place to camp.

From Sapeniro, CO, take US Rt. 50 west 2 miles to State Rt. 92 sign.
Turn right onto Rt. 92 and go 1.5 miles to Soap Creek Rd. sign. Turn
right at sign onto Soap Creek Rd. (gravel and rough in places) and go
8.2 miles to a "Y" intersection. Bear right and go 0.7 miles to
campground.
NOTE: During wet weather, travel on last half mile of Soap Creek road might
be risky.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 7,700 ft.
The campground, pack it in, pack it out, is located along Soap
Creek among mature Ponderosa and spruce trees near the West Elk
Wilderness. Chipmunks, squirrels and Hummingbirds abound
throughout the campground. The tent sites (all walk-in) have
delightful vistas of towering cliffs. Horse corrals with space
for dispersed camping are nearby.
