CAMPGROUND NAME: Union Creek VISIT DATE: 08/07/2005 UPDATE DATE: 7/9/2024 STATE: Oregon REGION: Pacific Northwest RANGER DISTRICT: High Cascades - Prospect Office NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Prospect RESERVATIONS: 1-877-444-6777 or make on-line reservation DIRECTIONS: In Prospect, OR, at intersection of Mill Creek Dr. and 1st. St., take Mill Creek Dr. north 0.3 miles to a "T" intersection. Turn right onto State Rt. 62 and go 10 miles to campground sign. Turn left at sign into campground. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 3,400 ft. The Annie Spring (south) entrance to Crater Lake National Park is 17 miles from campground. Folks have been camping along Union Creek for more than 100 years. Until 1934 when the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC - Company 1510 of Butte Falls) built the campground, sites were wherever campers pitched their tents. Today, this CCC campground has grown to three loops with campsites next to Union Creek or near Rogue River. The sites in the first loop, to the right of campground entrance, hug the creek and are tucked in among maple trees. In the second loop, straight in from entrance, campsites are within walking distance of the creek and river. It also enjoys shade from large fir trees and good privacy from a nice middlestory of vegetation. The third loop, largest in campground, is accessed via a bridge and has no water spigots. This loop has a mix of densely wooded and very sunny sites and limited access to the creek or river. Although the campground continues to be a popular spot, it retains much of its wilderness charm and CCC personality. Nearby, Union Creek General Store has limited groceries and Beckies Cafe is good for a cook's night out. Possible day trips are Crater Lake National Park, Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway with its waterfalls, and Rogue Gorge.
