GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 1,100 feet.

This pack it in, pack it out campground, with its grassy, nicely
manicured appearance, has two sections, each with a single loop.
One section is for campers with horses while the other is for
campers without horses. A fence seperates the two sections. The
campground is basically in an open area surrounded by rolling
grass-covered sandhills and groves of big old Burr oak trees.
The campsites on the southern side of each loop are tucked into a
dense grove of oak trees on the north face of a hill. While
these campsites enjoy lots of shade, the other sites are in the
open and are very sunny. The campsites are well separated
providing very good privacy. Campsites in the equestrian section
have no horse facilities but large, grassy open space between the
campsites are perfect for portable corrals.

Possible day trips are a visit to McLeod Museum in McLeod, ND and
a patch of "virgin" prairie northeast of Lisbon, ND. The McLeod
Museum is a good way to discover what life was like in rural
North Dakota. It is the communities effort to preserve their
history and is well worth the drive. Call 701-439-0057 for hours
of operation. Using GPS coordinates, access to the "virgin"
prairie is at N46 23.663, W197 28.157 while the actual patch of
prairie is at N46 23.623, W197 27.541.

Established in 1939, little is left of the old home. The campground has two overlapping loops in a stand of mature, towering Burr Oaks and is surrounded by a tall-grass prairie and sandhills. Adjacent to the North Country Trail, the campground is great for equestrian and mountain biker enthusiasts as well as campers. A variety of wildflowers bloom all summer and the nearby Sheyenne River plus the oak savannahs attract numerous birds making this campground a good place for birding. Certified weed-free hay is required. NOTE: The Sheyenne Oaks campground is a private campground a little over a mile east of this campground. At the neighboring farm is a tiny unmanned store offering a very limited number of groceries from their freezer. Payment uses the honor system.
