UPDATE DATE: 9/23/2020
STATE: Nevada
REGION: Intermountain
RANGER DISTRICT: Santa Rosa
NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Winnemucca
RESERVATIONS: No
DIRECTIONS:
From Winnemucca, NV, take US Rt. 95 north 21 miles to Lye Creek
campground sign at intersection of State Rt. 290. Turn right
onto State Rt. 290 and go 18.1 miles to Hinkey Summit and stop
signs in Paradise. Turn right at signs and go about 100 yards to
Lye Creek campground sign. Turn left at sign and go 16.9 miles
to Lye Creek Road sign. Turn left at sign and go 1.2 miles to
campground.
NOTE: The road surface for the last 15 miles is gravel and rough.
There are also stretches that are single-lane, steep, and
switchback. Although there are camp site parking aprons long
enough for medium sized RVs, driving an RV on the access roads is
not recommended.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 7,520 ft.
The campground, pack it in, pack it out, stretches up Lye Creek
drainage in a stand of Aspen. Four water sheds flow in Lye
Creek, ensuring it has some water most years. The elevation
and ample shade make the campground a comfortable place to
be in hot weather. Although the campground was not built by the
Civilain Conservation Corps (CCC), there are several examples
of their handiwork in the area. Two examples are the nearby Guard
Station and the access road. That road offers a change for a
comfortable stroll with little fear of traffic. The colorful Aspen
leaves in Fall should make the campground a good stop at that time.
Sharp eyes may spot Bighorn sheep in the surrounding rugged
mountains. There is a small convenience store in Paradise, NV that
has limited groceries.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 7,800 ft.
The campground, near Ruby Mountains Wilderness, is composed of
three unnamed loops at the mouth of Thomas Canyon. The camp

trees. The views of sheer glacier-carved walls and Thomas and

breathtaking. A drive up Lamoille Canyon is also spectacular.

DIRECTIONS:
In Ely, NV, at intersection of US Rts. 6/50/93, take Rt. 6 west
6.5 miles to campground sign. Turn left after sign onto gravel
road and go 0.2 miles to campground.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 7,400 ft.
The campground has three separate camping areas in Pinyon pine and
juniper. The first area is a snug, small 10-site loop with most
of the campground's pull-throughs. The next area, 0.1
miles from campground's entrance on the left, is for large RVs.
It has a water spigot at each site and more generous parking
areas. The last area, also 0.1 miles from the campground's entrance
across from the "RV area," is another loop with numerous back-ins.
This loop is well suited for tent campers and is closest to South
Trail Head. The campground also has a large area for group day-
use which includes a barbeque pit and slightly overgrown ball
field. See the many murals in Ely.
