Campground List

CAMPGROUND NAME: Andrews Cove

VISIT DATE: 05/10/1997

UPDATE DATE: 11/12/2020

STATE: Georgia

REGION: Southern

RANGER DISTRICT: Chattooga River

NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Helen

RESERVATIONS: No

DIRECTIONS:
From Helen, GA, take State Rt. 17/75 north for 6 miles to
campground sign. Turn right into campground.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 1,820 ft.

The sites are located along Andrews Creek, nestled among mature
hardwoods along a mountain-side. The campground is picturesque,
but not particularly RV friendly - narrow interior access road.

The German alpine-designed village of Helen is a neat place to
visit, walk around, shop and eat. The town was a classic example
of a failing "Small-Town USA." In the early 1970s, some town
business people got together and came up with the idea of
redeveloping Helen as a Bavarian village. It was accomplished
with surprising authenticity.

A scenic auto tour is suggested. At the campground, continue north
on State Rt. 75 for 2 or 3 miles to the Chattahoochee River sign.
Turn left at sign onto River Road 44 and enter the Mark Trail
Wilderness Area. Follow this road past the Upper Chattahoochee
River campground all the way down to Helen. The road is gravel
and meanders through the forest along the Chattahoochee River.
Take a picnic lunch and a camera and enjoy.

This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.

CAMPGROUND NAME: Upper Chattahoochee River VISIT DATE: 05/12/1997 UPDATE DATE: 8/10/2020 STATE: Georgia REGION: Southern RANGER DISTRICT: Chattooga River NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Helen RESERVATIONS: No DIRECTIONS: From Helen, GA, take State Rt. 17/75 north for 8.6 miles to Upper Chattahoochee River sign (River Road 44 - Mark Trail Wilderness). Turn left onto River Road 44 and go 4.6 miles to campground. NOTE: River Road 44 is gravel, single lane with turnouts. It is also steep in places with some switchbacks. GENERAL COMMENTS: The elevation is 2,260 ft. The campground is very picturesque and is situated along Upper Chattahoochee River in tall, mature mixed woods. Excellent campground for relaxing, fishing, enjoying the scenery and visiting Helen. There is also dispersed camping along River Road 44 all the way down to Helen. The German alpine-designed village of Helen is a neat place to visit, walk around, shop and eat. The town was a classic example of a failing "Small-Town USA." In the early 1970s, some town business people got together and came up with the idea of redeveloping Helen as a Bavarian village. This was accomplished with surprising authenticity. The town seems to be prospering now with many tourists enjoying this quaint "Bavarian village." When visiting Helen, suggest continuing down River Road 44 to the town (rather then going back up to State Rt. 17/75). The drive meanders alongside and over the river and is very scenic. This is especially true when the rhododendrons are blooming in June. This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.
