Dr. (Three Capes Scenic Route) and go 7.8 miles to Sand Lake Recreation
Area sign (Galloway Rd.). Turn left onto Galloway Rd. and go 2.3 miles
to campground sign. Turn right into campground.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
Elevation is 10 feet.

This campground is one of three in the Sand Lake Recreation Area and
is popular with ATV/OHV enthusiasts. There are two unnamed sections.
The first section has three rows of designated parking lot-style parking
aprons with no views of the Pacific Ocean. This section has the only
pull-through with parking aprons nearest to the campground's entrance
being the shortest. The second section is the newest and contains only
back-in campsites. The surrounding dunes provide some protection from the
wind. Some sites on the outer row are along the sand and provide an
alternative to pitching a tent on the paved parking surface. With no
tables and fire rings only at perimeter sites, campers often bring their
own portable raised fire grill. With few trees and no under or
middlestory, privacy between campsites is very poor. The campground is
surrounded on two sides by beach and dunes used by riders and can be noisy.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 50 ft.

The campground, one of three in the Sandlake Recreation Area, is
nestled in sand dunes adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. Popular with
OHV/ATV enthusiasts, the campground has four loops and a spur.
Campsites on the spur are closest to Sand Lake Estuary. While there,
we sighted deer in the campground and lots of ripe berries ready for
picking. Although not visible from any of the sites, the ocean can be
heard from most of them. Many of the sites have "V" shaped aprons
permitting one to park the RV on one part and tow vehicle on the other.
Shore pines provide some shade but in spite of them, along with the sand
and grass understory, privacy between campsites is poor.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 100 ft.

The campground, attractive and manicured, is located between Hwy 101
and towering sand dunes along the Pacific Ocean. At night, the sound
of a fog horn can be heard in the campground. It has four loops - A -
Azalea, B - Blackberry, C - Chinkapin and D - Dogwood. The campground
is heavily wooded with Cedar, Spruce, Rhododendron, and Alder.
Blackberry, huckleberry and salal bushes provide excellent privacy and
an abundance of berries in late summer. Loop Azalea and Blackberry
loops are joined by a short foot path. Loop Azalea has the greatest
number of campsites with electric hook-ups (all at campsites on the
inside of the loop) and lots of shade. There are also a few campsites
overlooking Sutton Creek. Blackberry Loop has more open, sunny campsite
than other loops and several campsites along Sutton Creek. Chinkapin
Loop has the smallest number of campsites and is the least RV-friendly.
It is recommended for campers with tents, pop-up, and those with slide-
in campers. It is also separate from Azalea and Blackberry loops. The
Dogwood loop is for groups and not included in this survey.

DIRECTIONS:
In Pacific City, OR, at the intersection of Brooten Rd. and Pacific Ave.
(has town's only gas station), take Pacific Ave west 0.2 miles to an
intersection. Turn right at this intersection onto Cape Kiawanda Dr.
(Three Capes Scenic Route) and go 7.8 miles to Sand Lake Recreation Area
sign (Galloway Rd.). Turn left onto Galloway Rd. and go 2.3 miles to
campground sign. Turn right into campground.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 10 feet.

This campground is one of three in the Sand Lake Recreation Area and is
popular with ATV/OHV enthusiasts. Designated parking lot-style parking
aprons form a horseshoe giving campers views of the dunes. This
configuration means a steady wind blowing year round. Some campsites
that backup on sand offer an alternative to pitching a tent on the paved
parking surface. With no tables, few fire rings or grilles, campers
often bring their own portable raised fire grill. There are two accesses
for ATV/OHVs to the sand in the campground that means lots of traffic
during daylight hours. With no overstory or understory, privacy between
campsites is very poor.
