CAMPGROUND NAME: Big Creek

VISIT DATE: 07/27/1998

UPDATE DATE: 11/5/2024

STATE: Montana

REGION: Northern

RANGER DISTRICT: Hungry Horse

NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Columbia Falls

RESERVATIONS: 1-877-444-6777 or make on-line reservation

DIRECTIONS:
In Columbia Falls, MT, take State Rt. 486 north 20.5 miles to
campground entrance on right.

NOTE: State Rt. 486 turns into dirt at 12.6 miles.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 3,300 ft.

The campground is located along the North Fork of the Flathead River,
a designated wild and scenic river. The understory is grassy
providing minimum privacy between sites with many sites overlooking
the river. The North Fork of the Flathead River is an excellent
family float river. There is a free map, Open Road Map, available
from the Hungry Horse Ranger District Office that, among other things,
has "put-ins" and "put-outs" on the North Fork of the Flathead River.
Big Creek empties into the North Fork of the Flathead River at the
campground. The campground is 2.5 miles from the Camas Creek
entrance to the Glacier National Park.

The Big Creek Outdoor Education Center of The Glacier Institute is
across the road from the campground. It provides "opportunities
for children and adults to learn about the diverse natural and
cultural resources of Glacier National Park and the Crown of the
Continent Ecosystem." The Institute offers field seminars including
guided hikes in the Glacier National Park. Although not all the
seminars and hikes originate from the Big Creek Outdoor Education
Center, some do. Check out their Web site for information and
schedule of events or telephone (406) 755-1211.

For information on the area in general, check out the Columbia Falls
Chamber of Commerce Web site (www.montanaweb.com/cfalls) or telephone
(406) 892-2072.
