Use less water camping
April 21, 2014
When I moved into my brick-and-stick house in southeast Arizona, a neighbor really when you camp, desert and tropical landscape, water conservation is a way of life. Here are some ways we stretch our water:
- Steam instead of boiling vegetables when possible. Steaming requires less water and leaves more nutrients.
- Rinse produce in a basin of water and not under a water tap, using a vegetable brush.
- Use hand sanitizer to clean hands.
- For a quick sponge bath use unscented baby wipes.
- Wash all you dirty dishes than rinse all at the same time in a tub of fresh clear water.
- Use hot water to wash dishes and fresh cold water for rinsing. Option: Add a cap full of liquid bleach to rinse water to sanitize.
- Use the clear rinse water from dinner dishes for bedtime bath.
- Use paper towels to wipe all debris from your dishes before washing them.
- While waiting for hot water from the tap, catch the running water in a clean jug or bucket to reuse it. Maybe you can use for rinsing dishes or flushing toilet.
- Don’t run the tap while brushing your teeth, shave, or wash your face or hands, conserve water by turning the tap on to just a slow dribble.
- Buy and use reusable plastic ice cubes. Conserved water and chills your drinks.
Always, always, always dispose of water using the “broadcast” method.
