Thanksgiving and RVing can work
I remember our first Thanksgiving as full-time RVers. It was a little exciting and very scary. We were camped in Salt Springs campground in the Ocala National Forest (FL), surrounded by hoards of families. It became apparent, these families knew what they were doing. It wasn’t their first rodeo. I, on the other hand, was totally out of my depth.
Well, as I have always said, there are never problems, just challenges to overcome. That first Thanksgiving Day dinner was full of challenges to overcome and we did with reasonable success. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, we weren’t unique in our trials. Most full-time RVers have gone through similar challenges.
Now, I have to be honest. Although I enjoy cooking, it’s the cleaning up that I find unattractive. So, based on my personal preference my tips are:
- use disposable container/pan/foil wrap as much as possible;
- go with turkey pieces in lieu of the whole bird; and best yet,
- if possible, consider having Thanksgiving dinner out, say at a local church, community center, or wherever. The churches in our little town do a community pot luck each Thanksgiving Day and it is so much fun Plus no dishes to do afterwards :-).
Which ever approach you take, enjoy the challenges and have a memorable Thanksgiving Day.
