Sandboarding on the Oregon Dunes
While at a overlook in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, a caravan arrived and out climbed a hoard of young people. Their plan was to hike about a mile to the “really big” dunes and sandboard to the water’s edge. From our explorations Fred and I knew there were some pretty tall dunes (they looked to be several stories tall) nearby but didn’t think there were any dunes that big here. But if those young people were like Fred and I in our younger days it would have matter. It would have been all about the thrill of trying something new. To bad youth is wasted on the young ’cause sandboarding sounds like good fun. Never saw anyone actually sandboarding but assume the technique is similar to snowboarding.
A little further down the beach, Fred and I found this stretch of deserted beach. A perfect spot for lunch and some quiet time watching the waves. Later, we learned just up a little ways the beach was open to Off-Road Vehicles but this stretch was a buffer to an endangered shorebird’s nest area.
