Golden Wall Trail begins on Highway 12 just west of the Red Canyon Visitor Center and near Red Canyon campground. It loops around the campground and ends on top of a ridge at Buckhorn Trail. At first you wind through a canyon passed towering Ponderosa pines and fanciful carved sandstone outcroppings until the trail begins to climb. Initially, the grade is gentle and the path wide. Once off the canyon floor, the trail climbs quickly over a surface that isn't particularly firm. It is a challenge to keep your eyes on the trail, ensuring your boots land in the best place, while enjoying amazing and glorious sights. The mountains in the distance beyond the fertile Sevier Valley, contain some fabulous sights of their own. Called the Markagunt Plateau, the soft lake deposits of Claron formation are carved and shaped into fanciful wonders like those found in Cedar Breaks National Monument. |
