This is the Dismal River which flows beside Whitetail campground. The story goes a beloved school teacher, Mrs Harry Pinderton, was going home one stormy winter night when she disappeared. That spring her body was found in the the river. It is said, this "dismal" incident gave the river its name. I'm sure such an event occurred but I think the river was given its name because of its appearance - wide, shallow, and often the color of weak cocoa made with water. The water looks too thick to drink, a "dismal" fact in this land of little water and soaring summer temperatures.
