Mary Schaffer Loop meanders through a near pristine woodland wilderness along the north shore of Maligne Lake. Mary Schaffer, a 19th Century upper-middle class matron from Philadelphia, is credited with "finding" Maligne Lake. She used a very crude map drawn by a man of the Stoney people to locate this beautiful body of water. What is really amazing is Mary confesses when she first began spending her summers in the Glacier National Park area, she had a fear of horses, wild lands, and wild animals. She overcame these fears and became an amazing outdoor person and explorer. Mary later settled in the community of Banff where, in 1913, she built a home on Grizzly Street. |
