Up to this point, all the glaciers we had seen were simply melting away one drip/drop at a time. Here we got to see whole chunks of the glacier fall into a pool of melt water. This process is called calving. The action provided us with an excellent view of the passage of seasons from layers inside the glacier. The dark layers could be ash from fires or, more likely, rubble falling from the higher reaches of Mount Edith Cavel. Notice how those dark strips are twisted and bent, probably caused by the enormous weight and movement of the glacier. |
