Rhyolite, just outside the Park's eastern boundary, boasted a population of 10,000 people in the early 1900s. During its peak, 1905 through 1911, the town contained 18 stores, 50 saloons, 2 churches, 19 lodging houses, a stock exchange, opera house, 2 dentists, 8 doctors, and 2 undertakers. Efforts are underway to preserve what is left including what you see here, and the jail, train depot, and several other structures. |
