Here you can see two by-products of Death Valley's rare but often fierce rain events. Rainfall has little chance of soaking into the hard baked soil. The run-off quickly becomes an intense flash flood carving ravines and gullies, carrying any loosened soil to the valley floor, and laying down another layer onto one of Death Valley's many alluvial fans.
