Water drains slowly from the depths of the Lake, making this a closed fragile environment. It is very probably visitors will never see or experience a more pristine body of water. We must thank the tireless efforts of William G. Steel for it preservation. It was largely through his efforts Congress established Crater Lake as our fifth national park in 1902.
