DIY Camper’s Cleaning Aids

basic clean suppliesFor me, camping isn’t a vacation from cleaning.  I have a stash of cleaning aids to help me.  All are DIY (do it yourself) and most use the same products.   Now, I don’t mind getting dirty.  Personally, I like playing in mud but I draw the line at living in a dirty place.  Part of my concern is in regards to our health but another part is I just don’t feel good being surround by a dirty mess.  (And yes, I am one of those people who makes their bed every morning.)  If you are like me, let’s share our cleaning aids.

  • General Cleaning Solution: In a spray bottle, mix 2 Tbsp of a mild dish-soap and 2 cups of water.  Spray the surface to be cleans with solution and with a clean rug, wipe the surface several times to remove moisture and dirt.  If the dirt is stubborn, spray and sprinkle baking soda.  Wipe as before but this time, use a little “elbow grease.”
  • Sanitize any surface:  Get two spray bottles.  Label one for vinegar and the other  hydrogen peroxide.  Fill each bottle with appropriate liquid.  Spray surface to be sanitize first with the vinegar then the hydrogen peroxide, let sit for awhile, then wipe dry.
  • Glass Cleaner: Make a solution from equal parts vinegar and hot water.  Apply to glass surface, scrub to remove bugs and such, and wipe dry.  (I prefer using newspaper for drying.)
  • Drain Cleaner:  (Tent campers won’t need this but if you camp in a RV, I suggest cleaning your drain, kitchen and bathroom, a couple of times each year.)  Pour 1/2 baking soda into the drain.  Gentle pour 1/2 cup vinegar into drain, on top of the baking soda.  “Plug” the drain with a rag and let sit for a while.  Flush drain with boiling hot water.
  • Cleaner for Wood Surfaces: (Another cleaner tent campers won’t need but RVers will use.)  Mix 2 Tbsp each of dish-soap and vinegar into a gallon of water.  Works equally on floors and cabinets.
  • Skunked Dog Cleaning Solution: (Hope you never need this.)  Mix up one quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and one or two teaspoons of liquid soap (we use Dawn dishsoap).  Then pour the solution onto the affected area and massage it all the way down to the skin.  Let it sit for about five minutes, than rinse thoroughly with clear water.  Repeat if necessary.
