- Cool the refrigerator, or your ice chest, before placing food inside.
- Never put hot food or drinks into the refrigerator or ice chest. Always cool it first.
- Don’t overpack. Blocking circulation of cold air reduces efficiency and cooling of food
- Wipe excess moisture off items to help prevent condensation and frost build-up.
- To help increase efficiency keep the door open only as long as necessary.
- Keep all food and drink containers tightly covered. This is critical when traveling from here to there.
- Cover vegetables and lettuce to help retain crispness.
- Seriously consider using two ice chests: one chest for drinks, which will be opened more than other other, and another for your “groceries.”
- Pack in the order of the menu. This means Saturday’s spaghetti and meat sauce would be packed in your chest before Thursday’s hot dogs.
- To avoid cross contamination from meat juice, store in two plastic bags.
Cover all highly “piquant” foods (onions, garlic, etc.) in either a covered dish, sealable bags, or plastic wrap to keep odors under control.
