In the USA, there are 122 ski areas in 13 states using a total of 182,095 acres of Forest Service-managed land offering downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing opportunities.  How many can you name?  Don’t feel bad if you can only name a handful.  Most Forest Service employees can’t do much better.  Click here for a list of all 122 ski areas.

Sixty-percent of all alpine skiing is happening on National Forests.  In the U.S., access to skiable terrain is often available via the same roads that were built long ago to connect mining outposts and timber towns. It is advised that you call ahead to be sure your route is open and safe.
