Sumpter Depot
02ride.jpg - The five-mile trip begins - At one time, the SVR linked Baker City and Prairie City, some 80 miles and a mountain range away, with a number of other little mining and logging communities. By the 1920s the railroad began to lose passenger and frieght business and started abandoning sections of its line. By 1937 scheduled passenger service was completely discontinued. By 1947, only 1.5 miles of track in the Oregon Lumber Company yard were still in use and this last stretch of track was removed in 1961. As part of its mission, the Sumpter Valley Railroad Restoration (SVRR) relaid track from McEwen to Sumpter and established an opportunity for all of us to experience a little bit of the Eastern Oregon region's history.
