There is more to Newberry National Volcanic Monument than first meets the eye. It is recommended a visitor's first stop should be at the Lava Lands Visitor Center then drive to the top of the adjacent Lava Butte for a panoramic, 360 degree view. Towering 500-ft Lava Butte is clearly seen from US Rt. 97 just south of Bend, Oregon and is a great introduction to the geology of Newberry Volcano.
