to the Pere Marquette National Scenic River with some sites
overlooking the river. The campground is a single loop with one spur,

available with a reservation - call the above reservation number. Once
shaded by maples and oaks, a tornado passed through the area in
2005 resulting in little shade for the campsites. There is little understory
providing limited privacy between sites. Between the attraction of the
Pere Marquette River and the North Country Trail, the campground
is popular with canoeists, anglers and hikers. It is pack it in,

The elevation is 650 ft.
The campground, part of the Hungerford Lake Recreation Area, is located
in rolling hills among maple, oak and other hardwoods. Pack it in, pack it
out, the campground is primarily a horse camp with limited privacy between
camping sites. Each site has picket poles; corrals are not permitted.
Campers are expected to clean up after their horses and dump in the manure
bin provided. A large tract of land provides a great experience for both equestrian
folks and mountain bikers. Under Forest Service supervision, the campground

DIRECTIONS:
From Manistee, MI, take State Rt. 31 south 7 miles to Forest
Trail Rd. (Forest Rt. 5629). Turn right onto Forest Trail Rd.
and go 7 miles to the campground.
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 600 ft.
The campground has four loops; Hemlock, Orchid, Oak, and Violet.
With 3.5 miles of bicycle/hiking trails within the campground,
two observation decks, a beautiful sandy beach with swimming area
provided, and a playground at the nearby picnic area, this
campground is ideal for families. Rolling sand dunes do not
encourage heavy vegetation so most sites are open and lack
privacy. Although Lake Michigan and Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness
Area are wonderful, the best thing about this campground are the
sunsets. They are breathtaking.
Adjoining the Lake Michigan Recreation campground is the
Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area. This is a favorite spot for
sunset watching, birding, and quiet reflection. The principle
path (mostly sand) into the Wilderness previously provided access
to the stage coach, railroad, and four wheel drive vehicles.
Since 1987 the only mode of transportation allowed is walking.
The ecosystem in the 3,450 acres tract varies from dune grass and
plants that tolerate desert-like conditions to those of a maple-
beech forest. As you walk along the trails look for a sage-green
leaf thistle plant. It is no more than 18 inches tall and blooms
in its second year before producing seeds and dyeing. This plant
is called "Pitcher-Thistle" and is used by the Forest Service to
monitor the health and well being of the Nordhouse Dunes.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 650 ft.
The campground, pack it in, pack it out, was a dispersed camping
area but is undergoing renovations and upgrading to a developed
campground. It is located in the middle of a well-established
Red pine plantation that was planted in the 1930s by the Civilian
Conservation Corps (CCC). The east side of the campground is
adjacent to Minnie Pond with some sites overlooking the pond. To
the south, a few other sites overlook Mena Creek. The mature Red
pine woods limit the understory to fallen pine needles (thick
enough for a comfortable mattress) providing little privacy
between sites. A foot bridge connects the campground with the
picnic area and boat launch site. Minnie Pond was formed by the
construction of a cement dam in the 1940s to establish a "Green
Tree Reservoir Area" for improving the area's waterfowl habitat.

The campground has a loop with single spur along the Little

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The campground is a single spur reaching toward the swimming
beach on Pine Lake. None of the sites are adjacent to the Lake.
Views are limited by vegetation and the position of the
campground's spur. Pine Lake is the largest lake in the Forest.
There are private residences and boat traffic.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 600 ft.
The campground, located on White River, has a small loop near the
campground's entrance and a long spur that ends in a large loop.
A few sites enjoy a limited view of White River. All camp sites
are nestled in a pleasant stand of mixed woods. The White River
has been designated a "Country-Scenic River" by the State of
Michigan. Thirty-seven-miles of this waterway are enjoyed by
canoeist and tubing enthusiasts. A canoe launching ramp and
trailhead for the 12-mile White River Trail make this campground
very popular. During a renovation, one site was found to contain
Indian artifacts. Five additional sites are designated for groups

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 1,000 ft.
This is a single loop campground with a majority of pull-through
sites located on the upper end of the Hodenpyl Dam Pond on the
Big Manistee River. It appears the campground was located in an
old Red pine tree plantation some time ago. The campground has a
well-established, tranquil feel. Large spacious sites near
Seaton Creek and Manistee River. The Manistee River Trailhead is
close by. This 10.5-mile trail follows the east bank of the
Manistee River and is a wonderful way to explore the Forest.
