We are asking ONLY for corrections/updates to our current data fields. Please do not include nice-to-have information not covered in one of our data fields. Include those thoughts in the Revisions forum. We'll expand the how-to explanations as we all gain experience for the process. Let's face it, having someone else collect data is new for us.

GPS coordinates. - We collect these data in two ways - actual on the ground and extrapolation from mapping programs, such as Delorme Topo Maps. The latter leaves a lot to be desired. If you are going to collect/correct this data, the coordinates should be taken at the campground fee board; no guesses from a mapping program. If the fee board is a problem because of location or some other reason, take coordinates at a couple locations and we'll discuss.

The format we use is N37 39.586, W103 34.258, for example. If you use another format, we'll try to convert.

Directions and Nearest Town - The nearest town must have gas and limited groceries, e.g. bread and milk and listed on the Rand McNally Road Atlas - no exceptions. Take the measurement from a major intersection (preferred) to the CG fee board. Account for every turn.

There's more, of course, but this should get you going.

I think that format, as best I can determine in Delrome Street Atlas, is "degrees, minutes". Is that what it is called in your computer mapping program?

That's correct. There's a name identifying it I used to know - still researching.

Ah, the joys of multiple coordinate types.

There are a lot of people who think that Degrees Minutes ( e.g N DD MM.MMM, W DD MM.MMM) typically used in Geocaching and decimal degrees (DD.DDDD, -DD.DDDD) which are used on Google maps are the same - that you do not need to use a conversion formula if you have one set of coordinates and want the other.

I've seen people "force" the coordinates from Google Maps into a GPS set up for Decimal minutes. When they see the location on the GPS map, they think something is not working.

The first coordinate is Latitude. The second is Longitude. We use two formats. degrees - minutes - seconds, or decimal degrees. A conversion is necessary between the 2 formats. The example above utilized degrees - minutes, and the decimals rounded the seconds.
