Having just entered into the hosting side of camping I feel it should really depend on the campground. I began with a recreation area that had 9 RV sites and 26 tent pads and at no time, holidays included, were we full. The RV sites filled up one weekend but we didn't have to turn anyone away. If the campground has a history such as this I see no need for a reservation system. If it is a campground that is usually full then a 50-50 system could be introduced. Even when traveling I found more than enough camping sites available. Of course it helps if you travel with a tent and are not in need of hookups.
