The better half and I were checking out some of the beaches in the Gulfport / Biloxi Mississippi area when we decided to make a quick trip into DeSoto NF. We went to check out Big Biloxi campground, one that Fred and Suzi had highly recommend. A definite gem - better than many private campgrounds we have seen over the years. Between the landscaping at each site, spacing and cleanliness, WOW. Water and electricity too. $20 a day.

If you get the chance, stay there for a day or two or three......

Beware of this campground! The local NF Law Enforcement Officer (Officer Anthony Bolton) is a rogue, overzealous officer, and will issue you an expensive ticket for the least violation of petty campground rules without any warning. When we were there he came into the campground and went systematically through each occupied site looking for any violations. He commanded everyone at each site to open their coolers, and if they had any beer, he made them pour it out and then gave them a $125 ticket. According to the camp host there, he also regularly gives tickets without any warning for parking even slightly off the pavement or setting up a camping unit or tent outside the site pads. The worst part is his abusive and threatening behavior and extreme suspicion of the campers - looking into your vehicles and tents like he was looking for anything he could get you for. He ruined our entire weekend camping experience, as we felt violated and like we were in a police state after he left. And we wondered why there was hardly anyone at the campground on a beautiful spring weekend. The camp host confirmed later that they get few visitors there because of the officer's behavior. I will never go back to the Desoto National Forest area unless they do something with this guy. He is a loose cannon.

That's interesting! During my three days and two nights there I saw a sheriff's deputy drive through once and wave as he passed by. The camp host, Jack, had apprised me of all the rules, specifically "No Alcohol" as posted on several signs. He did mention that someone had been given a ticket for that at some time in the past. I'm going back to stay longer as soon as I can. I really like this place and, because I am an old guy, I only paid $13. per night! After ten years in a big class C and commercial campgrounds - I'm having fun!!
