Just wondering how many of you use treking poles while you are hiking or backpacking. I started to use them a while back when backpacking and i found them to be quite helpful.

I have become a complete and serious user of trekking poles. *Everyone* who uses their feet to explore the out of doors, and that is not just backpackers, should have a set! The set I have has something like baby shock absorbers which are delightful. One thing I have to remember is to adjust for going uphill or downhill.

I carry trekking poles but i think they are rough on trails so only use them when I need them, mostly for difficult stream crossings and long sloping downhills to take some of the load off the knees. I think its a good idea to put them away on steep and rocky terrain where you need you hands. If you slip while descending steep terrain you can easily hit your head on the pole. It's better to slow down, be careful, and have your hands available. Poles are also helpful if you run into snow, but not good on ice. Carry crampons or "Stabilicers" if you expect ice...or turn around.

I started using them 4-5 years ago, and use them everywhere I pound trail. I have no reservation about recommending them to anyone who asks me about their use.

Trekking poles help a lot on steep downhills, stream and log crossings. I only break them out when I need them. It is important to note that hiking poles are not the best for each rough terrain situation. I've seen some using poles when crossing a boulder field where hands likely would have been a safer bet. Trekking poles also are not a substitute for being in shape. It is very important to be prepared physically for any long backpacking or hiking adventure.
