Geocaching is like a game of hide and seek. It is divided into two categories - "treasure" hunting and "virtual" discovery. What both categories have in common is the use of GPS coordinates to find a treasure or location. Also common to both is providing minimal information so as to encourage use of the GPS coordinates. Virtual Geocaching is the category embraced by this forum.

Treasure hunting is finding a hidden container with a logbook and maybe an inexpensive trinket that can be traded. This category is the least favored by the Forest Service because of the trash potential.

Virtual Geocaching is finding a location with a great view or overlook, an outstanding interpretive trail, a great fishing or swimming hole, wildlife viewing, a dispersed campsite and on and on.

This sport is an absolute blast. Whats even better, everyone in the family can participate.

We have been involved in geocaching for the last couple of years. We've taken others on searches and they have enjoyed the experience. Some have even gone on to purchase thier own equipment.

Another excellent site for additional information is http://www.geocaching.com

I hope everyone participates in this. I would love to see some cool areas to go!
:)

Understand what you are talking about but we prefer virtual geocaching - leave no trace, you know. Hope you'll participate in the virtual version as well as your physical caches . . . Fred

I love geocaching!

I discovered it about a year ago...and do it whenever I can.

I actually find it's a good family activity
:)

Many people I speak with about it don't know what it is, strangely enough.

Here's a good article I found on geocaching: http://www.ndparks.com/outdoor-gear/heard-geocaching.php.
