The majority of national forest and grassland campgrounds have a 14 day maximum stay limit although some forests are moving to 16 days. As gas prices continue to soar wouldn't a 23 days maximum stay limit be a good idea? Just a thought. What's your opinion?

For me, it depends on the type of CG. If the CG is located at a great fishing area, the retired or unemployed or homeless folks will fill it up and make it harder for me to find a good spot for a weekend. The cheaper out of the way CG, will have more homeless campers hanging out. I prefer the 14 day limit with some enforcement.

That might work for the retired,(which I will be again next year), but for us working stiffs, it doesn't matter if it's 10 or 50, if you don't have the time to go. I try to spread out my 3 weeks as much as possible, which only gives me 4 day weekends. With all the NF, NP, NG, BLM campging areas, I think 14 days is reasonable, give everyone a chance. But then I've never been one to stay in one place too long.

If the extended time was contingent on vacancies in the CG and no outstanding reservations for the site, it might work. But the proliferation of reservable sites would make it more cumbersome to manage and I certainly could not support being able to reserve for a longer period. It's difficult for many folks to find the spot they want now...I think this would compound the problem.

I think extending the limits should be accepted in principle and applied by situation, with the decision falling to the local authorities as to how much longer and on a case-by-case basis.
Keep track of the folks doing so, though... you're still going to have to find an upper end that balances enjoyment of the forest and practicality against the inevitable impact of a camp stying static for more than two weeks. I agree that empty campgrounds make no sense (and increase the need to find operating revenues elsewhere), especially when well-behaved, paying campers have to leave.

14 days is long enough and generous. Longer stays allow people to "move in" and it can get very trashy and creepy looking.
