Based on several different posts, it looks like we have a lot of people who have either done campground hosting or are planning to. I know that once we retire, we'll definitely do it too!
To have a sucessful campground host experience, what questions should one ask / what kinds of traits and experiences should one have to increase the chance of being sucessful?
Here is some of the the info I have gleaned from other posts / experiences I have had as a weekend camp-master at a local scout camp:
Questions to be asked:
- What training will I receive?
- What are my responsibilities?
- What tools / equipment will we be provided?
- What kind of campsite is the camphost provided?
- What are the number of work hours expected each week / what are the typical the busy times?
- What communication equipment are we provided?
- What is the typical response time for help? (Rangers / first aid)
Suggested traits:
- Love of the outdoors
- Very comfortable working with all kinds of people
- Patience / ability to keep situations calm.
- Basic maintenance skills
OK, that is a start. What would you add??

I think a high energy level would help a lot.

When I was looking for my 1st workamping job I decided I would not clean bathrooms1 I don't think I'm too good to do it or better than anyone else, but at my age having raised 4 kids I have cleaned all the bathrooms I intend to clean except my own. I found that a few years ago the NPS hired its own maintenance crew and that wasn't part of a volunteer's duties, unlike COE which always requires it of the host. Now that budgets are being cut I notice some NPS campgrounds are including this requirement.
Just be aware of this in case you would find it a problem for you. One objection I have is how the restrooms are treated by some campers (not all). I just wouldn't put up with it.
