During Memorial Day Weekend 2009, we went up to Nicolet National Forest. We stayed at Franklin Lake campground and had a wonderful time. The area is very popular during the summer for camping / hiking / fishing. Even though it was a major holiday weekend, the campground was very peaceful. Here are some pictures from the trip.... View of Franklin Lake from one of the spacious lakefront campsites View of Franklin Lake from the boat landing (yup, the landing is shallow one, especially with the current drought!) Question: We are thinking about a trip to that area in mid-July. How will the bugs (mosquitoes, black flies, etc.) be at that time? Also, what about chiggers? Live in AR but haven't developed an immunity yet.

I havn't been in Northern Wis this year. Usually, by July, the mosquitos only show up in the evening unless you are in a swampy area. Since there has been a drought there for the last several years, they should better than usual. (Last year when I took the pics at the end of May, the bugs were much better than usual.)
As for chiggers and ticks, best solution is if you are going thru high grass, etc that you put bug spray on. They are out there but if you take precautions, you should have no problems.
The area around Eagle River is very popular vacation area with lots of lakes for fishing so you may need to get to campsites early to get a site. Enjoy, it is a great area.
Hope this helps.

Trail Hiker,
I just stumbled across this post from the past and wanted to let you know how beautiful of a spot you found. I have been on the west coast my whole life and seriously all I want is a chance to go check out Wisconsin and Michigan, I hear so many good things. Great pictures! I'm jealous!

Wisconsin and Michigan are some of my favorite areas - Wisconsin especially where these pics were taken. Hundreds of lakes in the area with decent fishing. I'm already dreaming about my next trip up there.

Franklin Lake Campground is an independent library district serving a community of 19,500 in Chicago's near west suburbs. Throughout the library's hundred-year history, it has changed locations several times before moving into the current building in the mid-1980s
