On June 6, 2012, the American Recreation Coalition (ARC) met with the Forest Service where it set forth a proposal to modernize national forest campgrounds (and marinas). Some view this proposal as a way to ". . . heighten the influence of concessionaires in the national forests, and that the public opposes such influence." The purpose of this forum is to provide a platform for information and discussions about this very volatile subject.

We are missing many events within the national forests (NF) and grasslands (NG), i.e., fishing derby's, star gazing, guided motor tours and hikes, interpretive programs, etc. This forum is provided for all of us to share by announcing events we learn about in our trip planning research, event experiences on our trips and other sources.

The use of GPS Coordinates is growing not only for navigating from point A to B but also finding “treasure” and points of interest (POI) or Virtual Geocaching. For now, this forum is established for Virtual Geocaching.

Armed with your GPS device, create a topic giving the coordinates of a great view, a special dispersed camping site, a fishing or swimming hole that beats all, a wonderful interpretive trail, an ice cream parlor to die for, etc., etc. Share with members and visitors your memorable sights and locations BUT make finding them a bit of a challenge.

We've been asked by the Forest Service to prepare a presentation on our campground research - observations, recommendations, things like that. So, toward that end, tell me what you want in a national forest campground - rustic feel, RV hookups, hot showers, trails, swimming, host, dedicated tent sites, security, etc., etc.

Unless already established, send an email to the forum moderator and request a forum be established for the trip you are planning. For example, Bisbee, AZ to Chugach/Tongass NFs - Alaska. Or just Tongass NF - Alaska.

Suzi and I (Fred), authors of the U.S. National Forest Campground Guides), are planning on researching the Chugach and Tongass NFs in 2008. We will be traveling w/2 pets in our 31 ft. Class C motorhome with dingy. Advice/guidance will be greatly appreciated. Besides our usual campground surveys, what other information would you like us to cover for publication?
