230_11_pumice_ash.jpg This road cut between Farewell Bend campground and a view of Rabbit Ears offers an outstanding opportunity to study the depths of the Mt. Mazama pumice ash's deposit. Pumice is "a frothy variety of rhyolite glass. It is usually white and as light as wood" (Roadside Geology of Oregon). Here, the pumice feels like a coarse sea salt scrub except it is one solid mass. Look closely and discover pieces, most are thumb-nail or smaller in size, of burnt wood. Imagine that piece of burnt wood probably was a living tree some 7,000 years ago!
