138_11_apple_wildfire_2002_horseshoebend_cg2.jpg Between Horseshoe Bend and Gravel Bin's put-ins, there is a stretch of destruction caused by the 2002 Apple Fire. Only a small portion of the 18,000 burnt acres can be seen from the Byway but give a good indication of the damage and illustrates the recovery process. This photo was taken from the west side of Horseshoe Bend campground. The destruction doesn't look too bad from there. The "live" trees will reseed the foreground and the new brushy growth (the bright green groundcover) provides protection to those tender young seedlings. And the forest is reborn.
