138_03_n-umpquoa_river_bouldercreek_cg.jpg The upper segments of the Wild and Scenic North Umpqua River is rich in wondrous geologic beauty. Boulder Creek campground features a put-in for whitewater enthusiasts. Here, the river flows between the Byway and Boulder Creek Wilderness and gives kayakers and rafters striking views of volcanic spires and massive basalt columns. For those who prefer their adventures on terra firma, nearby Boulder Creek and Bradley trails provide hikers means to explore the Wilderness. Also, a 4-mile section of the North Umpqua Trail, along the River's north shoreline, follows an old road bed used by Perry and Jessie Wright, homesteaders to the area in 1915. Douglas fir and Big-leaf maple line the North Umpqua River and Byway making it a delightful autumn drive.
