138_01ccc-built_northumpqua_RD.jpg The Colliding Rivers Information Center was constructed in 1938 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). It has served as a ranger station, a home, and now the Colliding Rivers Information Center for the area. The craftsmanship and quality of workmanship are apparent in every detail. The Information Center marks the end, or beginning, of the Rogue-Umpqua Scenic Byway and represents only one of many contributions made by President Franklin D Roosevelt's "Green Army" or CCC. Another CCC contribution is just east of the convergence of Steamboat Creek and North Umpqua River, called Mott Bridge. These are two of the most accessible examples of CCC workmanship in the Umpqua National Forest but there are others. (Ask about them at the Information Center.) Take a few moments to walk around the Information Center. In back, discover a towering Redwood (aka Sequoia) tree. In front of this historic structure, Little River and North Umpqua Rivers "collide" as the result of a unique geologic phenomenon giving the place its name.
