CAMPGROUND NAME: Lake McClellan RA

VISIT DATE: 07/19/2010

UPDATE DATE: 2/19/2024

STATE: Texas

REGION: Southwestern

RANGER DISTRICT: Black Kettle & McClellan Creek

NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Alanreed

RESERVATIONS: No

DIRECTIONS:
From Alanreed, TX take I-40 west 6.5 miles to Lake McClellan
Recreation Area/Farm Rd. 2477 signs at Exit 128. Bear right at
exit sign and go to the stop sign. Turn right onto Rd. 2477
(narrow paved two lane) and go 2.3 miles to campground's first
section (tent-only) or 3.1 miles to campground sign and second
section (combined sites). Turn left at sign and go 0.1 mile to a
"Y" intersection. Bear right and go 0.3 miles to campground.

GENERAL COMMENTS:
The elevation is 3,000-ft.

The campground has two unnamed sections that permit ATVs. The
first section is 2.3 miles from I-40 and is tent only with no
potable water and is pack-it-in, pack-it-out. These tent sites
are walk-in and are on the banks of Lake McClellan. These sites
are sunny with poor privacy. The second section is 3.1 miles
from I-40 and has combined sites, some with electric and water
hook-ups. Cottonwoods provide shade to sites 9-18. All other
sites are side-by-side, parking lot style sites with little or no
shade. Convenient to I-40, the campground would be okay for
overnight stay. Popular on weekends with ATV enthusiasts.

The campground and grassland was named for General George B.
McClellan. He was an Army surveyor, inventor of the McClellan
saddle, Union General and ran against Abraham Lincoln for
President.

This is rattlesnake country, watch where you step.
