Met Smokey Bear
Good meetings with Forest Service last week. Got to spend time with Smokey in his office. (If you ever get to the Forest Service Headquarters on the corner of Independence and 14th, Washington, DC, do drop in and say hello!), then meet with the Deputy Chief before lunch and a group working on a redesign of the Forest Service’s “main” website.

The reason for the redesign is the realization we, the majority of national forest users, go to national forests to recreate and the current website focus is a programmatic stuff. Now, while I have an interest in stuff like global warming, I think the public’s real interest is answering questions like, “Where do I go?”, “What is there to do?”,”Are the any bans, restrictions, or limitations” and such.
It sounded like the folks in that website redesign committee are picking up on the type of questions you and I ask and need answered. Hopefully they’ll keep us in the loop and we can pass on any thoughts and/or suggestions you might want to pass on to us.
Not sure how this redesigned website will integrate with individual national forests and grasslands’s websites or when we, the public, will see the redesign. We’ll let you know as soon as we know.
