OMG – The dog has been skunked!

I guess it’s that time of year.   Dani is a true outdoor dog and once the sun goes down she begs to be let outside.  This wouldn’t be a problem but the warm weather has also brought out a bumper crop of skunks into our neighborhood which apparently Dani thinks are great play things.  Wouldn’t you think after the first four or five times being sprayed she would learn but not our girl.  The upshot is we’ve gotten really good to de-skunking a 60 pound dog.  This is the treatment we have had the best results.

Mix up one quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and one or two teaspoons of liquid soap (we use Dawn dishsoap).  Then pour the solution onto the affected area and massage it all the way down to the skin.  Let it sit for about five minutes, than rinse thoroughly with clear water.  Repeat if necessary.

Two tips – Don’t let the dog into the house/tent until completely de-skunked and check there are no skunks around before letting the dog out.
